Old Bar Junior Tennis Player with Bright Future

Posted on Monday, September 07, 2015

Aston Purdon from Mitchells Island has just made the 11 years of age junior tennis team to compete in the NSW Medibank Junior Development State final series to be held in Sydney later in the year. The Medibank Junior Development Series (MJDS) is a group of round-robin tournaments played throughout the seven regions of NSW for up and coming young junior tennis players. The series culminates in a Champion of Champions tournament in each region followed by the Medibank MJDS State Final.

Aston who is competing in his first year of this series has had to compete against other junior players in his age group, firstly in the lower north coast region to make the team of 8 players who then compete against the best 8 players from the upper north coast. He was successful and made the team of 8 to play in the Champion of Champion series against the best players from the North West region of NSW, which was held in Inverell at the end of August 2015.

This is a great achievement considering that the 11’s lower north coast  division of the 2015 Medibank Junior Development Series consisted of a series of 8 tournaments played from February to July with competitors from Foster to Coffs Harbour. There were 26 registered entrants in the Series. Points were accumulated throughout the series and averaged to give the best 8 players. Aston came third in the series which was considered to be one of the strongest in the 20 years the event has been running.

The best 8 in the lower north coast division versed the best 8 in the upper north coast region which is from Coffs Harbour to Tweed Heads. There were 31 entrants in the upper division at the East Coast Champions tournament held in Grafton in July. In this championship Aston came 5th and qualified for the North East team to play the North West team at Inverell for the Champion of Champions.

The Inverell Champion of Champions tournament saw the best 16 players from the 4 development series play out for 8 spots to represent the North of NSW in the State Finals. Aston qualified in the top 8 and booked a spot at the State Finals to be held at Richmond Tennis Centre in Sydney on Saturday 31st Oct to Monday 2nd of November 2015.

Aston attends Mitchells Island Public school and plays most of his tennis at Old Bar Tennis Club, where he is coached by local tennis coach, Wayne Deer. Wayne said Aston is an enthusiastic and dedicated young player who works hard and is developing into a very promising tennis player, thoroughly deserving the distinction to be in this team. He added Aston has a wonderful attitude to the game which is evidenced by him being awarded the “sportsmanship award “at the recent Grafton divisional series finals.

When asked about his recent success Astonsaid I’m excited to play in Sydney and represent Old Bar. Also a big thanks to my coach Wayne Deer and everybody at the Old Bar Tennis club for their support.  I’ll do my best.
